We had a very busy, productive, and musical week in Room100 this week! We were busy exploring different instruments from Africa and learning how to play in a musical team (or ensemble). This week we focused on learning our first song together called "Ensemble 1". This song featured three different conga drums, a shekere, an acousti-block, and a gankogui bell, too! If you aren't sure what these instruments are (or how to pronounce them) ask your student!
The next few days brought excitement and challenged us to think "outside of the box" as we took a look at all of the non-traditional items that we could potentially use as percussion instruments. We watched a video of the Blueman group performing on an instrument called a "drumbone" that is comprised of different sizes of PVC pipe. Check out the video by clicking HERE.
Students then had the opportunity to create their very own percussion instrument made out of materials they found at home. Students spent the next class composing 12 measure rhythms using quarter notes, half notes, and eighth notes in small groups. Students notated their compositions on the musical staff. We then performed for the class! I'm very excited about the progress that the 3rd term Exploring Music classes are making! I can't wait to continue to make music together!
