The OMS Exploring Music 6 classes had a very busy, productive, and fun week exploring the guitar and musical notation! This week we learned new notes, composed our own guitar music, and even had our first performance quiz!
We started off the week by putting our composing skills to work. First, students individually created a four measure rhythm using a variety of quarter notes, eighth notes, and half notes. Then students split up into small groups to create a "super song" comprised of all of the individual compositions. Students played these compositions on their guitars on the notes E, F and G and had the opportunity to perform for their classmates.
As the week continued on, we began to play several short musical examples utilizing the notes E, F, and G. By Tuesday, we learned our song for our first quiz called "Spanish Theme Song". We had time to practice "Spanish Theme Song" on Wednesday and had our first performance quiz on Thursday. Check out what the song looks like in musical notation below! The 4th period Exploring Music Class is shown in the video below performing "Spanish Theme Song"! Be sure to check ParentPortal for your musician's results!

Today (Friday) we began class by learning three new notes: B, C, and D on the second string of the guitar. We practiced reading these new notes on the musical staff by playing a game on Ipads called "Note Derby". We even had time to check out some more short songs that incorporated our new notes! Next week we will begin to learn our final song which is Ode to Joy by the famous composer Beethoven. Check back next week to see how much more we have learned!
