Happy Friday! Happy holidays! Happy winter vacation!
We had a wonderful week together in Exploring Music 6! We are in the middle of our guitar unit and have already learned how to play the notes E, F, and G. We have also learned where the notes E, F, G, B, C, and D live on the musical staff! To help us keep all of the note names straight we played a game called Flashnote Derby on the Ipads at the beginning of class on Wednesday. This game featured the students riding a reindeer through the snow covered woods. The app shows a flash card with musical notation written on it. In order for the reindeer to advance, the students had to select the correct note. This was a fun and interactive way to practice our note names!

At the beginning of the week we focused on learning a piece called "Spanish Theme" which uses the first three notes that we have been learning on guitar: E, F and G. We practiced our "Spanish Theme" song in duos and had our first performance quiz of the quarter on Wednesday. Congratulations to all of the musicians in both classes - everyone had an outstanding performance! Check parent portal for your musicians grade.
We took a break from playing guitar at the end of the week to learn a little more about the instrument itself. We learned about the history of the guitar, genres of music that implement guitar, and some famous guitar players, too. Ask your student if they remember who the example was from the 1960's time period! Some of these examples may even sound familiar to you! Students were given a worksheet to fill out as we went through the slideshow. This worksheet will act as a part of the study guide for the end of unit test. On Friday, we switched gears to talk about film scoring or adding music to a movie. We watched some clips from the Polar Express without the sound and talked about the type of instruments we would have used and the type of music we would compose if we were the person writing the film score. We enjoyed pretending that we were the composer! We then watched the same video clip again WITH sound and talked about what hearing the music added to the experience of watching the film clip.
